What happens between a doctor writing a prescription and a patient receiving their medication? In this Career Tour with Amazon Future Engineer, you'll follow that journey from the inside – visiting an Amazon Pharmacy fulfilment centre to discover how cutting-edge technology and skilled people work together to make it happen. Whether you're drawn to healthcare, science, or engineering, there's a career here with your name on it.
Meet your guides for the tour, Kira and TJ, as they prepare for a field trip to an Amazon Pharmacy fulfilment centre. You'll find out why Amazon Pharmacy is changing the way people get their prescriptions, and start thinking about one big question: can you really trust robots with medication?
Step into the fulfilment centre and meet Harmony, one of Amazon Pharmacy's Pharmacists. She'll explain what pharmacists actually do, how they work alongside engineers, scientists, and technicians, and how Amazon Pharmacy delivers prescriptions straight to customers' doors and provides 24/7 access to a pharmacist.
Meet Michelle, a Pharmacy Technician who processes prescriptions the moment they arrive. You'll learn about prescription ingestion, the different ways prescriptions come in, and how AI and human expertise work together to get every order into the system accurately.
Jeff, an Applied Scientist, explains how machine learning helps the team process prescriptions faster and more accurately. You'll discover how AI is trained on past examples, and what happens when it makes a mistake.
Before a prescription can be filled, a pharmacist needs to know it's safe. Harmony returns to explain how medication works at a cellular level, what drug interactions are, and why a deep understanding of chemistry and biology sits at the heart of a pharmacist's training.
Meet Tomas, a Process Engineer who designs the automated systems that fill prescriptions. You'll see robots in action, learn how input, processing, and output work in a real fulfilment centre, and find out what automation can and can't replace.
Sudan, a Pharmacist working in quality control, shows how computer vision and human expertise combine to check every prescription before it leaves the building. You'll understand why pharmacy will never be fully automated, and why that's a good thing!
It's time to get the prescription to the patient. Harmony explains how most orders are delivered in just a few days, and how Amazon is making same-day delivery faster and more sustainable with electric vehicles and e-bikes.
